Healthcare Crisis Looms: Doctors Declare Countrywide Strike

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced a nationwide strike to begin at midnight on March 13, 2024. The decision comes as a response to what the union describes as the government’s lack of commitment to address critical issues affecting healthcare workers.

In a statement released by Dr. Davji Atella, the Secretary General of KMPDU expressed deep regret over the government’s failure to address pressing concerns raised by the union. “Regrettably, the government has shown a lack of willingness to address these pressing concerns, leaving healthcare workers in a state of frustration and dismay,” Dr. Atella stated.

Dr. Atella further emphasized the union’s disappointment, stating, “Therefore, it is with great disappointment that we announce the commencement of a nationwide strike starting from midnight today, March 13, 2024.”

The union has voiced its grievances, highlighting the need for improved working conditions, better remuneration, and enhanced healthcare infrastructure. Despite expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue, the KMPDU has accused the government of failing to take the matter seriously.

“Within the seven days of the strike notice, the union has expressed a willingness to engage in a dialogue. However, all we have witnessed is a lack of seriousness from the government coupled with a conspicuous absence of goodwill,” remarked Dr. Atella.

The impending strike raises concerns about its potential impact on doctors nationwide. With doctors poised to withdraw their services, there are fears of disruptions in medical care delivery and their repercussions on public health.

Efforts to avert the strike and resume negotiations between the KMPDU and the government are underway, but the union remains steadfast in its decision to proceed with the industrial action.

As the countdown to the strike begins, stakeholders are urged to seek a swift resolution to the impasse to prevent further disruptions to the healthcare sector and ensure the well-being of both healthcare workers and patients alike.
